Keep Your Teeth Healthy For A Happy Heart

amalgamRecent studies have shown that dental health is directly related to your overall physical well being, especially heart disease and cardiovascular function. Specifically, having too many amalgam fillings has been shown to increase the chances for thyroid related heart problems, and gum disease and infection has been linked to heart problems as well.

The general theory is that by not flossing and brushing and rinsing with an antibacterial mouth wash regularly, you allow bad bacteria to build in your mouth. This in turn causes gum disease or other infections in your mouth. These bad bacteria can then break out and travel through the blood stream.

This is especially the case with gum disease and infection. Often, the first sign of gum problems is bleeding when you brush. This a red flag that there are open areas in your mouth for the bacteria to travel through. It is recommended that you see your dentist right away if this happens.

By catching gum disease and other mouth infections early, you are helping your heart to stay healthy and function properly. Flossing also gets rid of plaque, which can hold bacteria in place in your mouth for extended periods of time. Using an antibacterial mouthwash also helps. It gets rid of the bacteria that are harder to reach with your toothbrush, in areas like the back of your throat and tongue.

Brushing your tongue at least once a day, as well as the sides of your mouth and inner cheek area, also helps keep bad bacteria at bay. By brushing after every meal, using floss at least once a day, and rinsing your mouth with a good mouthwash, you have just taken several quick steps to help your heart and cardiovascular system, and all it cost you was time.
